The owners requested a house design that was unique without ostentation on the only undeveloped property in this neighborhood. The front and side yard setbacks and a 22-inch cherry tree at the rear determined the building envelope. The style that evolved contained elements of the “Craftsman” style with broad overhangs, exposed rake and fascia board tails and a gracious front porch.

The first floor of this approximately 2,500 square foot house seems larger since the kitchen, dining and living areas are open to each other. This openness is enhanced by a high ceiling over the living area and a fireplace with tall flanking windows. The library is accessed by pocket French doors off the foyer, with an adjoining study with access to the side porch. The first floor trim was kept simple by utilizing a stained flat casing with a continuous wood trim line at the top of the eight-foot doors and window heads, thus unifying the spaces.

The second floor hallway features an open grille at the ceiling which filters natural light down from the cupola windows above. The remaining space on the second floor contains the master bedroom with a cathedral ceiling and fireplace, laundry room and two bedrooms with a shared bath.
